Prescott is one of Northern Arizona's most sought after communities.
Prescott, Arizona, a city of 30,000, is located about 90 miles northwest
of Phoenix. With its mountain mile high elevation, the city enjoys a four-season
climate with both mild winters and summers.
In 1864, the town site was surveyed and laid out along Granite Creek
where gold had been panned. The town was designated the capital of the
new territory of Arizona after Arizona was separated from New Mexico.
President Lincoln wanted the territorial capital in the northern part
of the territory, far away from the Confederate sympathizing cities to
the south.
As the territorial capital, Prescott became the most Midwestern-looking
city in Arizona. Victorian homes and peaked roof homes were built, a far
cry from the adobe structures that were more common in the Southwest.
Today, the city continues to be the county seat of Yavapai County and
is the center of commerce and trade for the tri-city area. In 1995, about
85,000 people call the tri-city area home. The Courthouse Plaza, located
in the center of the downtown and framed by towering oaks, is the focal
point for myriad activities, including crafts fairs, antique shows and
art shows. The plaza and Yavapai County Courthouse are well-known throughout
Arizona as symbolizing the quint essential mid-western downtown square.
